| History in Brief |
Although there is evidence that a Savannah golf club existed as far back as 1794, The Savannah Golf Club, as we now know it, was incorporated on December 29, 1899 in Chatham County. A site was chosen on the eastern side of the city and the first land was bought on August 1, 1900. At the time, there existed a complete line of Confederate fortifications, which extended across the entire property and it was decided that the course should be laid out to utilize the fortifications as hazards. Today, after numerous changes and alterations to the golf course, these fortifications still play an integral part in the course design. The Savannah Golf Club is a private, member owned organization rich in Georgia golf history. Seven times it has hosted the state amateur championship, three times the women's state amateur and it annually hosts regional qualifying for both the state amateur and the Southern Amateur championships. |
